LUZIA from Cirque du Soleil is coming to Tysons Corner, Virginia

Is watching a performance by Cirque du Soleil on your bucket list? Now is your chance!

Cirque du Soleil LUZIA has made its stop under the Big Tent in Tysons Corner, VA until May 27th. Sean and I went with some close friends and this show is a big hit!

This was my second Cirque du Soleil show and I equally enjoyed them both. Each show is totally unique and offers a different set of skills and talents. I had the opportunity to watch “OVO” in National Harbor in 2010 and was super excited to see LUZIA from Cirque du Soleil for the first time this Spring.

The talent of the performers and the vibrant and creative costumes are absolutely incredible!

One of the many things I love about all the Cirque du Soleil shows is the variety of acts. You'll see acrobrats, gymnasts, contortionists, dancers, singers, jugglers, magicians.... And the sets are AMAZING! There is always a theme - LUZIA's theme is "A Waking Dream of Mexico".

About the Show

LUZIA is a play on the words luz and alluvia, which mean light and water. Like all of the amazing shows brought to you by Cirque du Soleil, LUZIA has a rich theme - this show puts you in the middle of imaginary Mexico. The vibrant culture, grand visual surprises and breathtaking acrobatic performances will transport you to a place suspended somewhere between dreams and reality.

All Cirque de Soleil performances are awe-dropping, but they really upped their game in LUZIA by incorporating the rainfall as a source of inspiration!

Walking into the tent, you are immediately take to a different place. The set is already up and creates a feeling a mystery - what is this giant medallion structure in this beautiful field of yellow flowers?

While guests are taking their seats, the performers keep those already seated entertained. Be sure to look around the audience as well - there are characters climbing up each of the pillars that separate the different seating sections.

The tent is large but not so large that the seats are too far away. Even in the very back, you can clearly see the performers because many of the acts are high up towards the top of the tent and the entire set spins so you always have a good view of each performing act no matter where you are seated. We had excellent seats in the front of the audience.

I love that there are characters everywhere interacting with audience. This part would be fun for children, too.

The set and costumes are truly marvelous!

There are 16 different acts in the show. Each act just as beautiful as the last. Most of the time you don't even realize things are changing because your attention is drawn elsewhere. Not to mention, they have the whole audience laughing many times without even uttering a single word!

Early into the show, the acrobatics start with a diving act on a moving treadmill. They dove through small hoops that are raised higher and higher, having to twist their bodies smaller and smaller to get through these tiny hoops in extraordinary ways!

I was truly mesmerized by the futbol freestylers with their nimble ball skills mixed with street dance. I took only one quick video of them and then put my phone down to fully enjoy this mind-blowing talent act. They were incredibly spectacular! This short video doesn't even come close to showing you the staggering tricks that come later in this act!

It amazes me how every little detail is captured on set, right down to the way the animals move and interact with the performers. So life-like!

My husband's favorite act was the juggler. He ran all over the stage and even out into the middle of the audience while juggling and never missed a beat! At one point, he was juggling six batons! It was the most impressive juggling act I have ever seen! The pics do not do his act justice. You will be in awe when you see it in person!

The strength of the artists is unparalleled! All of their muscles bulging, yet they make it look so easy!

This guy's strength was extra special! I could see every one of his muscles trembling while he balanced on what appeared to be plungers.

And they kept making them taller and taller and taller!

One of my favorite parts about the show was the incorporation of water!

From the cascading waterfalls emerged beautiful patterns/designs. I wish I could have caught this part on video so you could see the patterns/images changing. It was awesome!

It was so unexpected!

The audience was captivated!

It was hard to pick a favorite act! Each of them were so impressive. They kept upping the wow factor throughout the show.

To me, the swinging pendulums appeared to be the most dangerous of the acts.

The whole audience was on the edge of their seats while the acrobats jumped from one swinging pendulum to another. See this short video to be amazed!

I wasn’t expecting the last part of the show. The cast walked candles out to the stage and when the lights came on, there was a male contortionist frozen in position, skillfully twisting his body in the most unimaginable way! Then, he began to move his body in more ways that didn't seem humanly possible! I was so enthralled and totally creeped out at the same time! Insane!

Of course there is NO way to share just how amazing this show is in photographs! Often when I have my camera with me, I feel that it takes me away from the event and I didn’t want to do that (especially since I was enjoying the show on a double date) - so these are all cell phone photos, but I think they still captured the amazement! Don't you think?!

Don't miss your chance to see this one-of-a-kind performance in Tysons Corner, VA through May 27th! Explore old and new Mexico in this visionary journey only as Cirque du Soleil could take you on.

Tips to Know Before You Go

  • Parking fee is $25/car across the street at 1800 Galleria Drive. If you park at Tysons Galleria Mall, be warned that there are police officers monitoring the lot.

  • There are concession stands for alcoholic beverages and other snacks like popcorn, pretzels, candy.

  • Lines are long during intermission.

  • The seats are small. Be prepared to snuggle up close to your neighbor.

  • Dress in layers as it can get cold inside the tent.

  • The bathrooms are glorified porta-potties. So you will not be able to set anything down.

  • I recommend traveling light. Leg room in the seating rows is tight - women will not have a place to store a large purse/diaper bag.

  • Do NOT use a flash during the show.

Have you been to Cirque du Soleil? What was your favorite themed performance so far?
